Digital Health: “Medicine is no longer only the concern of doctors”

May 25, 2016

We have apps for our fitness sessions. We have games for the physical therapy. That’s part of the reason why Lavinia Ionita says medicine is a process which involves a lot more professional categories than doctors.

After working for Marmottan Hospital and the American Hospital (both in Paris), Lavinia Ionita built her own practice based on a holistic approach.

In 2015, she decided to throw all of her experience into omixy. Now she’s coming to ICEEhealth, a satellite event @ ICEEfest this year. Before her speech, Lavinia Ionita gave a short interview to Lorena Macnaughtan.

From a doctor’s perspective, what can digital technologies do for us?

          – Digital technologies can be a crucial step in transforming medicine. They’re allow for simple and easy access to medical care through telemedicine consultations.

          – Today these consultations are much more than just a video call: they provide secure access to your doctor, give you access to your medical files through a mobile app, and can help your doctor coordinate with your pharmacy to get you the medications you need.

          – Additionally, the world of health apps allow patients to share information and data with their doctors, which is critical to developing more personalised prevention practices.

          – Overall, digital technologies are going to help us store and track information over time – both for us as individuals, and as a collective source of medical knowledge that can lead to breakthroughs in prevention and treatment.

What about the omics?

          – “Omics” science is the way to the most comprehensive diagnosis we can make.

          – Based at the molecular level, omics looks at our genetics and DNA, at the DNA of the bacteria that live within all of us, at our metabolomics (the tiny molecules that are produced within our cells), and at a wide range of other biomarkers.

           – Omics are what allow us to move from asking about symptoms (which only come along once disease is already present) to asking about our health and how to optimize it today rather than waiting for problems to arise.

How is it to be a doctor entrepreneur?

          – Being a doctor/entrepreneur is scary, especially at the beginning!

          – Any reasonable doctor who has built a career and a practice is scared of taking the jump, going off into the big unknown of entrepreneurship.

          – But when you’re still motivated by what made you become a doctor in the first place – wanting to help people and change their lives for the better – it helps you to make the decision, and to make it now!

          – There may be a risk of failure, but our first mission as doctors is to help people to be healthier.

          – For me, that meant becoming an entrepreneur, building a team and a product – it’s challenging and means a lot of work (even by a doctor’s standards), but it’s also incredibly exciting.

Tell us what makes omixy a new disruptive business model for health?

          – Omixy wants to improve people’s health with science and simplicity. We believe that prevention and better diagnoses are the key to that.

          – Disease comes along slowly, building over the years into a real problem.

          – Having a deeper insight into our bodies, seeing problems before they arrive, and gathering as much information as possible about not just ‘disease’ but also the individual organism is what will improve short-term health and long-term comfort.

          – Omixy wants the information that can empower patients, in ways that encourage them to have a check-up and use telemedicine and a nurse coming to your home or office. And we want to explain what’s going on in clear language that you can easily understand, giving you direct access to your results through our app.

          – Healthier and happier: those are our two goals.

Why should doctors join a digital health conference, which brings together many different health participants – doctors, patients, pharma… and so on?

          – Doctors must be aware that the old ways of medicine are about to die off, even if it may still take several years.

          – How fast and how well the renewal of our medical practices occurs will depend on each of us.

          – So participating in these events is a way to share the excitement of new developments, to keep up on the latest advances, and to think about what our profession will be tomorrow.

          – I also love the rich exchanges that come out of conferences, since inspiration is a big part of pushing forward. Each discovery should be a humble reminder of just how little we know, and a spark of energy that shows what an incredible moment is beginning for medicine and all of humanity.

          – Generally, doctors should also remember to open their minds, since medicine is no longer only the concern of doctors: new experiences and knowledge come from data technicians, engineers, industry experts, even designers; and today it’s also critical to see the patients as part of that process as well!
